5 Useful Facts about Feeding America

Did you know that an estimated one in every six children in America struggle with hunger. In our nation’s poorest counties, it is reported that an alarming number of children miss several meals a day and go to bed hungry regularly. In thig blog, I will highlight 5 facts about Feeding America and ways we can go about fighting hunger in America.

Recently, I had the privilege of taking my children to feed the homeless around our local community. You can check it out HERE.

Useful Fact #1: Feeding America is a nationwide network of food banks. According to Feeding America, John van Hengel, a retired businessman, came up with the concept of food banking in Phoenix, AZ, in the late 1960s. Today, Feeding America has hundreds of locations spread across the United States. Click here for the full list.

*A food bank is a warehouse for millions of pounds of food and other products that go out to the community. A food pantry functions as the arms that reach out to that community directly. Some use mobile food pantries, which reach people in areas of high need.

Useful Fact #2: Clair Babineaux-Fontenot is the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, a Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, La.; and a Master of Laws in Taxation from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas. You can read more about the Louisiana native here.

Useful Fact #3: For the past four decades plus, Feeding America has fought our nation’s hunger crisis. Per Feeding America, here are some hunger facts:

-34 million people in the United States are food insecure.

-9 million children in the United States are food insecure.

-53 million people turned to food programs in 2021.

-100% of U.S. counties have food insecurity.

Useful Fact #4: Per their website, for every one dollar given, 10 meals are provided for families in need through the Feeding America network of food banks. Putting that into perspective, during the time of me writing this blog, I have spent $10 on snacks and a drink. That same $10 could have gone to providing food for 100 families in need.

Useful Fact #5: There are several awesome ways you can give back through Feeding America. One of course is through donations. They also provide at least six other ways you can give back through time and efforts found here.

I hope you have found this information useful and that you consider giving back!
